Whether you have built before, it is your first time, you are considering building or you have worked/work in new construction, we have all heard or have a horror story! Not everyone will be able to build a new home in their lifetime, so it is important to us that you enjoy the experience. Here are some simple but important tips to help you navigate the building process to help you have the best experience possible! 

Ask Questions

You’re not a homebuilding expert; that’s your builder’s job.  Don’t hesitate to ask questions and foster open and honest communication throughout the process. Ask questions to fully understand what is happening during different stages of construction. 

Prepare for Unexpected Obstacles

Remember that 95% of the home building process is completed by humans. Be prepared to work through some typical human error. Even with the best house plans money can buy, people still make mistakes.

Realistic Expectations

All of the time, money, and energy that is spent making the decisions needed to build a new home can take a toll on your mental well-being. Fortunately, building a home can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your lifetime – provided you know what to expect. If you have unrealistic expectations, you will almost always be disappointed.

Things Look Worse Before They Look Better 

It’s important to remember that things often look worse before they get better.  This is an obvious statement, but an important one to remember. Your home is under construction, so when a new phase of construction has started, it isn’t always a true representation of what the finished product will be. 

Communication, Communication, Communication

Communicate everything and don’t assume anything.  While there is no way to avoid mistakes, you can minimize them by being specific and making it clear what your wants/needs are. As with all things in life, good communication is key!

Enjoy the process as much as possible!  While there will be stressful days, there will also be days of complete joy and excitement while you are building your home.  It is an amazing thing to see your vision come to life right in front of your eyes.  Remember how fortunate you are to have the opportunity to create this future home for you and your family.
